How to clear your web browser cache

Below are instructions on how to clear the browser cache of some common web browsers.

Please note that these instructions apply to the desktop versions of each browser, and the procedure for the mobile or tablet versions of the browsers may vary.

If you are using a mobile browser, or a different browser to those listed on this page, instructions for clearing the cache should be available from the Help section on your browser’s menu, or from your browser’s online support pages.

Browsers

Chrome

  1. Click on the group of three horizontal lines in the top-right corner of the Firefox window to open the menu.
  2. Select 'Options' from the menu.
  3. On the 'Options' screen, select 'Privacy and security' from the menu on the left side of the screen.
  4. Scroll down until you reach the 'Cookies and Site Data' section.
  5. Click on 'Clear Data'.
  6. On the 'Clear Data' screen, tick the box next to 'Cached web content' and click 'Clear'.
  7. Close down and re-open the Firefox browser window.

Firefox

  1. Click on the group of three horizontal lines in the top-right corner of the Firefox window to open the menu.
  2. Select 'Options' from the menu.
  3. On the 'Options' screen, select 'Privacy and security' from the menu on the left side of the screen.
  4. Scroll down until you reach the 'Cookies and Site Data' section.
  5. Click on 'Clear Data'.
  6. On the 'Clear Data' screen, tick the box next to 'Cached web content' and click 'Clear'.
  7. Close down and re-open the Firefox browser window.

Internet Explorer (IE)

  1. Click the cog icon in the top-right corner of the IE browser window to open the 'Tools' menu.
  2. Select 'Internet Options' from the menu.
  3. On the 'Internet Options' window, under the 'Browsing History' heading click 'Delete…'.
  4. On the 'Delete browsing history' window, tick the box next to 'Temporary Internet files and website files' and click 'Delete'.
  5. On the 'Internet Options' window, click OK.
  6. Close down and re-open the IE browser window.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Click on the group of three dots in the top-right corner of the Edge browser window to open the menu.
  2. Select 'Settings' from the menu.
  3. On the 'Settings' menu, select 'Privacy & security' from the list on the left side of the menu.
  4. Under the 'Clear browsing data' heading, click 'Choose what to clear'.
  5. Tick the box next to 'Cached data and files' and click 'Clear'.
  6. Close down and re-open the Edge browser window.

Safari

Clearing cache and cookies in Safari:

  1. With the Safari app open, click on Safari in the top-left corner of the screen, and select 'Preferences'.
  2. On the 'Preferences' screen, click on 'Privacy'.
  3. Click on 'Manage Website Data', and click 'Remove All' then 'Done'. (If you get a prompt to confirm that you want to remove all data, click on 'Remove Now'.)
  4. Close down and re-open Safari.

Please note that the above method will clear the cache and cookies for all sites. If you want to clear your cache without also deleting your cookies, please use the method below.

Clearing cache without removing cookies in Safari:

  1. With the Safari app open, click on 'Develop' on the menu bar at the top of the screen. If the 'Develop' option isn't shown, you can add it to the menu bar as follows:
    • Click on Safari in the top-left corner of the screen.
    • Select 'Preferences'.
    • On the 'Preference' screen, click on 'Advanced'.
    • Tick the box next to 'Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar'.
  2. On the Develop menu, select 'Empty Caches'.
  3. Close down and re-open Safari.
